HISTORY

Bengali Driving School was born three years ago out of a failed sketch comedy group that never existed. In fact, the very title of the show refers to the first sketch that was never written. Since then Bengali Driving School has grown into the most popular televised underground experience from coast to coast and Connecticut.

In 1997 a handful of young and talented actors, writers, comedians, and drinkers failed to start a successful sketch comedy group, which would grace the stages of beautiful New York City clubs. The prospect of forcing their friends to schlep down to some remote sinkhole of a club and fork over eight dollars plus a two-drink minimum (tip included) revolted them. So, they decided to bring their unique brand of comedy home to TV. We grew up on television.

All of our thoughts and ideas are broadcast first in our heads on our private cable stations. We took our practical theatre experience and combined it with our life of TV experience and began producing what is now the best cable access comedy show in New York City.

Bengali Driving School is a short filmmaker’s approach to sketch comedy. It combines guerilla film making with improv comedy with social commentary and blue-collar vulgarity, creating an ongoing experiment with a diverse identity we never planned. We are glad to say we reflect New York City honestly with a varied cast and a ridiculously wide range of subject matter. From the gay super hero to homicidal street performers to the world’s biggest bong spanning the Empire State building, we got it all. And, we ain’t through by a long shot.
